Apple Maps Rolls Out Sponsored Listings in North America Without Option to Disable
Users in the United States and Canada will see sponsored business recommendations before and after searches
Apple has officially started rolling out advertisements within Apple Maps for users across the United States and Canada, marking a notable shift for the long-standing navigation service. The sponsored placements are integrated into two main areas within the app interface: inside the Suggested Places section before a search begins, and at the top of results after a user submits a query. Each promotional result is marked with a blue badge labeled as an advertisement, with Apple restricting placements to a single sponsored result per query. Users have no setting or toggle to turn the advertisements off, and paid subscription plans such as Apple One or iCloud+ provide no exemption from the promotional listings. Apple maintains that the ad system operates on contextual signals, including search terms, the active map area, and approximate device location, rather than persistent user profiles. The company confirmed that ad engagements are not linked to personal Apple Accounts and that user privacy remains protected on the device.
